Nissan wants to use batteries from old Leaf models in production

But e-mobility also brings some challenges, in some cases it is not yet clear what we can do with old batteries. Some studies predict that by 2040 around 7 million tons of battery waste will be generated. The battery of an electric car has already reached the end of its life if it is only 80 percent of its original load. The car manufacturer Nissan has therefore developed a concept of how used electricity storage systems can continue to be used.

To do this, we have to look at Nissan’s production sites. Driverless transport systems (AGV), which are powered by batteries, are used in the various halls. These usually consist of lead-acid batteries that are harmful to the environment and only last around two years. The subsequent disposal is usually problematic and expensive. For electromobility to be successful, it must make a contribution to environmental protection over decades.
