Mercedes EQS – the beginning of a new era

Today Mercedes presented the new fully electric EQS. It should be the fully electric counterpart to the S-Class. After I had been able to test the S-Class for two weeks, it was clear to me: The S-Class is the best car in the world at the moment.

This inevitably means that Mercedes can still do it with the EQS deliver better vehicle? But regardless of whether the EQS is better than the S-Class, there is no question that it heralds a new era at Mercedes.

As you can see in the video, we were invited before the premiere, to take a seat in the EQS.

As you know, design can be argued about. Personally, I really like the futuristic design of the EQS. Regardless of how you like the design, the purpose design as a pure electric car offers the EQS a number of advantages. The long wheelbase gives the passengers a lot of space inside.

In addition, the EQS with the right rim creates a drag coefficient of 0, 20 to reach. This will make the EQS the most aerodynamic production car in the world. This top value naturally also has a positive influence on the range.

With a range of up to 770 kilometers according to WLTP and an output of up to 385 kW, the EQS should also meet high demands. With such a range, hardly anyone should get range anxiety – even with normal electric cars this is usually not appropriate.

The EQS also sets new standards in recuperation! In the optimal case it can be up to 297 Feed kW of energy back into the battery. This means that it achieves a delay of 3 m /.

The MBUX Hyperscreen is an absolute eye-catcher. On a width of 135 cm three displays merge seamlessly into one another. The large cover glass of the MBUX Hyperscreen is molded using the mold process at temperatures of approx. 650 ° C bent three-dimensionally. This process enables a distortion-free view of the display unit over the entire width of the vehicle, regardless of the radius of the cover glass.

The EQS will be the first electric car ever to have three different optional driving sounds. There should be something for every taste. In addition, one of the three sounds is included, so that in principle more could follow in the future.

Over The Air Update play a major role in the EQS. Every EQS comes with 4.5 ° rear axle steering as standard. Alternatively, a rear axle steering with an impact of up to 10 ° ordered or subsequently activated by an upgrade over the air (OTA). As a result, the turning circle of the EQS, which is over five meters long, is 10, 9 meters possible.

The EQS optionally offers automatic comfort doors. This means that all doors can automatically open and close again. This feature is currently not even available in the S-Class and was previously only available in Rolls-Royce cars.

I had the opportunity to see the EQS up close in advance without camouflage and was also allowed to ride a lap as a co-driver.

In the last few weeks I have thought a lot about riding in the EQS. The 35 minutes drive and the amount of new information was overwhelming.

The initial question was: Is the EQS even better than the S-Class? I can’t answer that question at the moment. The S-Class has set the bar very high.

I am very sure that the EQS will be the new reference for electric cars. Similar to the S-Class, the OTA topic is also the Achilles’ heel of the EQS.

With the EQS, a new era is finally beginning at Mercedes. For me it is the first car with which Mercedes shows that you take electromobility seriously and will do everything to ensure success. You can see that in some areas (#Hyerscreen) it is more modern than the S-Class. I’m not sure whether the EQS will be the new Mercedes flagship, but it’s definitely the top end of the spearhead.

Personally, I really like the strategy of having two high-end luxury class vehicles smart. Also that the EQS can be ordered with the “normal” MBUX from the S-Class. This makes the car not only interesting for the super progressive, but also exciting for the classic S-Class clientele.

Whether the EQS gets a status or reputation similar to the S-Class will be Show time. The characters look good in my opinion.
